When we last left our story, The entire cast of the Arnie J. Armbruster stories (All two of them) were reconed into a 1930's Film Noir setting. Arnie was now called Arnold. He was also now a Private Detective & not a Lawyer. Arnold was on the case of the recently murdered Police Chief. He had arrested the suspected killer, "Big Bad Voodoo" Sherman Mulvain, the City's Water Commissioner. Why was he the suspected killer: 1. He had blood all over him & 2. He was the last one to see the Chief alive. A short time later, his wife, Mrs. Mulvain came to Arnold for his help to free her husband. Arnold didn't care that It was a conflict of interest, he took the case. Now on with the story....

I had a person all pegged for the murder. I wouldn't have thought it was him but being covered in blood was a slight give away that he was guilty of something. There was also the fact that he was the last to see Mr. Graham alive. Mr. Mulvain claimed that he had a meeting with Graham, which was true. Mr. Graham's secretary confirmed that. The meeting lasted for an hour & then Graham went off to a party over on the outskirts of town at some fancy mansion. The secretary saw Mulvain run out to say one last thing to Graham before he left.

The next anyone saw Graham was at the bottom of a ravine the next day, night, whatever. It was 12 hours later anyways, he was a mile or two away from his destination.

Shortly after I had Mrs. Mulvain come to ask for my help, I made my way down to the crime scene to check for further clues. I didn't look for many when I first saw the scene, it didn't seem to matter at the moment. But, maybe somewhere there were clues that could help me in this mystery. I wasn't surprised to find Dury & his boys down there. They had been there since Graham was found, Detective Dury was the Mayor's top Detective. I guess the Mayor has his own thoughts about Graham's death.

Once I came into view, Dury began to berate me. It's one of the few thing Dury does well. "Armbruster! What the heck are you doing here? I thought we got rid of you." Dury said with an evil smile. When he talked, his took his cigarette out of his mouth.

I know Dury didn't like me. You sleep with a guy's girlfriend one time & he hates you for life! I hate Dury too, it's not because Dury slept with my Girlfriend or anything like that: I just think Dury is a jerk.

"No. I'm still on the case." I said offhandedly, I didn't want to give him anymore ammunition to berate me with. I then went about searching for clues.

"Your not going to find anything. Our Lab boys have already picked this place clean." He said.

"Then, what's with all this dirt?" I joked. Dury didn't laugh. Dury never laughs.

As I continued to look, a few of his "Boys" conferred with him. I only half listened to them, most of the info that was related was stuff I already knew.

As was about to go into the brush to look for clues, Dury stopped me. "You can't go in there, that's private property. The Yukishiro's live there."

"Behind this bush?"

"No, Armbruster." Dury said & sighed. "But, that bush is on the edge of their property. They live up the hill." Dury said & pointed up to the big mansion on the hill.

"Who else lives around here?"

"Well, over there is creepy old Darkness mansion. Over there is the Wooster's & at the end of the road, where Mr. Graham was heading to, is the mansion of Manfred Wilton."

I knew some of these names, most of them were imports from other countries. The Darkness family were a Settler family (One of the first rich families in the city). The Wilton & Wooster were English imports during the turn of last century & were upper class royal fuss budgets that are living off of Mummy & Daddy's money. I hadn't heard much about the Yukishiro family other then they came from China, Japan, one of those Asia countries. They were also in some way related to the Tokyo Wong's, the infamous crime family.

I wondered off, Dury didn't ask where. That was good, I had another place I had to be.

--------------------

The central Police station, downtown. I don't come here often mostly because people tend to hate me here. Why is it I'm only attracted to other people's girlfriend? But, the Station has what I need. I flirted with secretary at the front desk & she let me in. Those girls are easy, a little too easy for my tastes.

It's 4 am. No one was really there, just the night shift & few others. I just need to get in to the Evidence Locker, see what they found where Graham had his last stand & get the heck out of there. I went about "unlocking" the door, but it was soon opened to me another way. There was someone in there. It was the Station's Archivist, I guess he was working late.

"Can I help you?" he asked with some distain in his voice as he looked at me over his glasses.

"Sure. Has the Graham case evidence been turned in yet?"

The Archivist sighed & then said "Yes. It's 4 am, why wouldn't it have been?"

"Can I have it?"

"Yes. but you'll have to fill out this form first." He said, handed me the form & then pushed up his glasses.

I fudged most of the info on the sheet. But he didn't point it out to me, so I guess he didn't notice or didn't care. He handed me the Evidence box, pointed out a place where I could look at the stuff. Then, closed the door rather forcefully.

I looked through the contents & nothing really stood out to me but I made a few notes some I could look them over later. I returned the box to the nice archivist. While I did that I found out his last name: Bookman. I found that an oddly specific name for his job.

I left & went back to the office. The later that day (If you can call it that), I was looking over the paper. One news item caught my attention: Mr. Wilton was having another party. I called out to Snookie & asked if she want to go party crashing with me. Of course, she said yes.

TO BE CONTINUED....

Next Time: Arnold & Snookie crash a high society party! Also in attendance: more people who dislike/hate Arnold.
